Ortenberg liegt an den südlichen Ausläufern des Vogelsbergs im Tal der Nidder auf einer Höhe von 141 m über NN, etwa acht Kilometer nordwestlich von Büdingen.
Ortenberg grenzt im Norden an die Stadt Nidda, im Nordosten an die Gemeinde Hirzenhain, im Osten an die Stadt Gedern und die Gemeinde Kefenrod, im Süden an die Stadt Büdingen, im Südwesten an die Gemeinde Glauburg, sowie im Westen an die Gemeinde Ranstadt.
