Der Schafhof und die Eisen-, Frickleins-, Hölzleins- und Veitsmühle sind keine amtlich benannten Gemeindeteile.
Obernzenn wurde wahrscheinlich im 8. Jahrhundert gegründet. Erstmals namentlich erwähnt wurde es ca. 900 als „Cenne“, 1260 erstmals als „Oberencenne“ zur Unterscheidung von Unternzenn und Langenzenn. Der Ortsname leitet sich vom Flussnamen Zenn ab. Dieser kann auf die indogermanische Wurzel *ten zurückgeführt werden.
