Obermarchtal liegt auf einer Weißjuraplatte am Fuße der Schwäbischen Alb. Die Ortschaft liegt an der Donau, die hier ihren zweiten Durchbruch durch die Schwäbische Alb verlässt. Von hier aus öffnet sich in Richtung Süden das Tor zu Oberschwaben mit Sicht auf die höchste Erhebung Oberschwabens, dem Bussen.
