Die Gemeinde liegt im Odenwald etwa 25 km nördlich von Heidelberg und rund 30 km nordöstlich von Mannheim. Sie befindet sich an der B 38 und wird von der Weschnitz und dem namensgebenden Mörlenbach durchflossen.
Die nachweisbare geologische Geschichte Mörlenbachs beginnt mit der Bildung des Bergsträßer Odenwalds, der sich als westlicher Teil des Kristallinen Odenwalds von Darmstadt bis Heidelberg erstreckt. In weiterer Eingrenzung liegt Mörlenbach im Gebiet des sogenannten Weschnitzplutons . Daran grenzen der Trommgranit sowie eine Mischzone aus metamorphen Gesteinschollen an, von Granitoiden durchdrungen bzw. umgeben. Diese Formationen wurden verursacht durch große Bewegungen der Erdkruste in zwei verschiedenen Erdzeitaltern.
