Die Gemeinde grenzt an das Amt Lensahn und den Kreis Plön und liegt in der Nähe des Bungsbergs in der Landschaft Wagrien. Ab dem 8. Jahrhundert war das Gebiet wendisch besiedelt, worauf auch die heutigen Ortsnamen noch hinweisen.
Wangels besteht aus den 19 Ortsteilen Barensdorf, Hansühn, Karlshof, Kükelühn, Meischenstorf, Neutestorf, Testorf , Charlottenhof, Ehlerstorf, Farve, Grammdorf, Hohenstein, Wangels , Döhnsdorf, Friederikenhof, Groß-Wessek, Testorferfelde, Wasbuck und Weißenhaus . Hansühn bildet das Zentrum der Gemeinde. Auch das Ostseebad Weißenhäuser Strand an der Hohwachter Bucht liegt im Gemeindegebiet.
