Die Gemeinde wurde am 1. Dezember 1970 durch den Zusammenschluss der ehemals selbstständigen Gemeinden Eiterhagen, Wattenbach und Wellerode im Rahmen der Gebietsreform neu gebildet. Ihr Name wurde durch die Lage im Mittelgebirge Söhre gewählt. Söhrewald zählt zu den Wohngemeinden von Nordhessen und besitzt kaum Industrie. In der Vergangenheit waren die Söhrewalder Dörfer landwirtschaftlich geprägt.
