Hohenstein grenzt im Norden an die Gemeinde Aarbergen, im Nordosten an die Gemeinde Hünstetten, im Osten und Süden an die Stadt Taunusstein, im Südwesten an die Stadt Bad Schwalbach, sowie im Westen an die Gemeinde Heidenrod .
Die Gemeinde besteht aus den Ortsteilen Breithardt , Burg-Hohenstein, Holzhausen über Aar, Strinz-Margarethä, Born, Hennethal und Steckenroth.
