Helmstedt ist die Kreisstadt des Landkreises Helmstedt in Niedersachsen und eine selbständige Gemeinde. Sie liegt zwischen Elm und Lappwald, etwa 36 km östlich von Braunschweig und etwa 45 km westlich von Magdeburg an der Grenze zu Sachsen-Anhalt.
Während der Deutschen Teilung befand sich hier an der Bundesautobahn 2 der wichtigste Grenzübergang zwischen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik sowie der westliche Endpunkt einer der Transitstrecken nach West-Berlin. Das Pendant als Grenzbahnhof war der Bahnhof Helmstedt.
