Der urkundlich bereits im Frühmittelalter erwähnte Ort wurde um 1100 zum Namensgeber eines Grafengeschlechts, das Rainald von Dassel europaweit bekannt machte, und bekam 1315 Stadtrechte. Heute ist Dassel als Grundzentrum klassifiziert, das in dem Teilbereich der schulischen Bildung die Aufgaben eines Mittelzentrums wahrnimmt.
