Olpe ist eine Mittlere kreisangehörige Stadt des Kreises Olpe im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg, Nordrhein-Westfalen . Im Jahre 1311 wurden ihr die Stadtrechte von Erzbischof Heinrich II. Graf von Virneburg verliehen. Seit 1819 ist sie Kreisstadt und Sitz des Kreistages des Kreises Olpe. Aufgrund der Vielzahl von Linden, die man seit dem Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts anpflanzte, hatte die Stadt den Beinamen „Stadt der tausend Linden“. Daran angelehnt lautet das Motto des jährlichen Stadtfestes „Olpe feiert unter den Linden“.
