Lüdenscheid ist die Kreisstadt und eine Große kreisangehörige Stadt des Märkischen Kreises und liegt im Nordwesten des Sauerlandes im Regierungsbezirk Arnsberg in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Die Stadt zählt 71.230 Einwohner . Der Beiname „Bergstadt“ wird seit Jahrzehnten häufig verwendet und fand unter anderem Eingang in die offizielle Bezeichnung des dritten städtischen Gymnasiums. „Stadt des Lichts“ ist ein der Stadtwerbung dienendes Attribut der jüngsten Zeit und nimmt Bezug auf die Lüdenscheider Lampen- und Leuchtenindustrie. Lüdenscheid bildet das kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Zentrum des südlichen Märkischen Kreises mit Ausstrahlungen darüber hinaus. Funktional ist es ein Mittelzentrum mit Teilfunktionen eines Oberzentrums. Vor den Gebietsreformen der 1970er Jahre war die Stadt die einwohnerstärkste des Sauerlandes und Südwestfalens.
