Hessisch Lichtenau liegt rund 20 km südöstlich von Kassel zwischen dem am Hirschberg bis 643,4 m ü. NHN hohen Kaufunger Wald im Norden, dem Hohen Meißner im Osten, dem Stölzinger Gebirge mit dem Eisberg im Südosten und der Günsteröder Höhe mit dem Himmelsberg im Südwesten. Die von diesen Höhenzügen umrahmte Talsenke wird Hessisch-Lichtenauer Becken genannt, das wie die Kernstadt von Hessisch Lichtenau von der Losse durchflossen wird und zum Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land gehört.
