Grebenstein liegt westlich des Reinhardswalds zwischen Kassel und Hofgeismar am Fluss Esse. Über der Stadt steht die Ruine der Burg Grebenstein.
Grebenstein grenzt im Norden an die Stadt Hofgeismar, im Nordosten an das gemeindefreie Gebiet Gutsbezirk Reinhardswald, im Osten an die Stadt Immenhausen, im Südosten an die Gemeinde Espenau, im Süden und Westen an die Gemeinde Calden, sowie im Nordwesten an die Stadt Liebenau .
