Hofgeismar liegt in der Hofgeismarer Rötsenke etwa 21 Kilometer nordnordwestlich von Kassel. Es befindet sich unmittelbar südöstlich des Hofgeismarer Stadtwaldes zwischen Trendelburg im Norden und Grebenstein im Süden direkt oberhalb der Einmündung der Lempe in die Esse. Das Gemeindegebiet erstreckt sich zwischen 124 m und 392 m ü. NN , die Kernstadt liegt auf durchschnittlich 165 m Höhe.
