Elten ist ein Dorf, das an den Hügeln von Montferland in der Gemeinde Emmerich liegt.
Im Mittelalter gehörte Elten zunächst zum Herzogtum Geldern. 1355 kam das Dorf zum Herzogtum Kleve. Das Herzogtum Kleve und damit auch Elten kamen 1666 in den Besitz von Brandenburg, wonach es 1701 preußischer Besitz wurde. War das Land rund um Kleve zuvor noch niederländischsprachig, nahm nach der preußischen Annexion der Einfluss des Deutschen als Amtssprache stark zu. Dies verstärkte sich noch 1815 nach den napoleonischen Kriegen.
Das Dorf ist an drei Seiten von den Niederlanden umgeben. Am 23. April 1949 wurde es als Entschädigung für die deutsche Besetzung während des Zweiten Weltkriegs den Niederlanden zugewiesen. Dies dauerte bis zur ‘Butternacht’ am 1. August 1963, als es wieder deutsch wurde.
