Das Kernkraftwerk Mülheim-Kärlich am linken Rheinufer nordwestlich von Koblenz war das einzige Kernkraftwerk in Rheinland-Pfalz. Am 1. März 1986 wurde es in Betrieb genommen. Wegen eines fehlerhaften Baugenehmigungsverfahrens musste es schon 30 Monate nach der Erstkritikalität am 9. September 1988 wieder vom Netz gehen. Der Druckwasserreaktor der dritten Generation hatte eine elektrische Bruttoleistung von 1.302 Megawatt. Der Kühlturm wurde 2019 abgerissen; der Komplettabriss soll in den späten 2020er-Jahren abgeschlossen sein.
