Sanssouci ist die ehemalige Sommerresidenz von Friedrich dem Großen, König von Preußen.
Friedrich bat den großen Mathematiker Leonhard Euler, hier in seinem Garten einen Wasserstrahl zu erzeugen. Euler berechnete die Kraft der Räder, die erforderlich war, um das Wasser in einen Reservoir zu heben, aber irgendwie funktionierte es nicht. Friedrich zeigte sehr deutlich seine Enttäuschung über Euler. Am Ende musste Euler Berlin wegen seiner Auseinandersetzungen mit Friedrich dem Großen verlassen. Er würde zur St. Petersburger Akademie zurückkehren.
Diese Streitigkeiten wurden von dem Philosophen Voltaire angeheizt, der seine Position am Hofe Friedrichs des Großen festigen wollte.
