Der Ort liegt etwa 0,5 Kilometer nordwestlich von Bornsen und etwa 3,5 Kilometer nördlich des Ortsteils Jübar. Bis zur nordöstlich gelegenen Kreisstadt Salzwedel sind es etwa 22 Kilometer, bis zur westlich gelegenen niedersächsischen Stadt Wittingen etwa 11,5 Kilometer. Bis zur im Südwesten verlaufenden Bundesstraße 244 sind es rund acht Kilometer.
Drebenstedt wurde 1375 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Die spätgotische Backsteinkirche in Drebenstedt wurde im 16. Jahrhundert gebaut.
