Das Unternehmen, welches am 8. Juli 2005 gegründet wurde, ist hauptsächlich im Bauzugverkehr innerhalb Deutschlands tätig. Dafür verfügt es über einen eigenen Fuhrpark, der aus 25 Lokomotiven der Baureihen 203, 214 und 225 sowie einigen Güterwagen besteht. Außerdem besitzt das Unternehmen eigene Gleisanlagen in Hannover-Leinhausen und in Misburg, und Oebisfelde mit eigener Werkstatt, die auch von Dritten genutzt werden können; diese Gleise sind 4250 m lang. Die Zulassung als EVU besitzt die BBL seit dem 17. Februar 2006 und gilt bis zum 10. Februar 2021. Das Stammkapital beträgt 250.000 Euro. Die BBL hat ca. 600 Güterwagen der Bauarten Fc und Res angemietet.
