Der Rhein-Erft-Kreis ist eine Gebietskörperschaft mit 471.891 Einwohnern im Westen von Nordrhein-Westfalen im Regierungsbezirk Köln. Er umfasst das dicht besiedelte Umland im Westen der Millionenstadt Köln sowie den dünner besiedelten Ostteil der Jülich-Zülpicher Börde zu beiden Seiten der namensgebenden Erft. Die Kreisstadt des Rhein-Erft-Kreises ist Bergheim, seine größte Stadt ist Kerpen. Der Kreis ist, gemessen an der Einwohnerzahl, der fünftgrößte Landkreis in Nordrhein-Westfalen und der neuntgrößte in Deutschland.
