Die Straßenbahn Jena nahm am 6. April 1901 als neunte elektrische Straßenbahn in Thüringen den Betrieb auf, die Spurweite beträgt 1000 mm.
In den Jahren 1894 bis 1898 prüfte der Jenaer Gemeinderat, wie ein Elektrizitätswerk für die öffentliche Stromversorgung mit angeschlossener Straßenbahn finanziert und gebaut werden könne. Im Gespräch waren sowohl private als auch kommunale Varianten. Diese Aktivitäten mündeten in einem Konzessionsvertrag mit der Berliner Bank, der am 14. Januar 1899 unterzeichnet wurde. Diese Bank beauftragte ihrerseits die Eisenbahnbau-Gesellschaft Becker & Co. GmbH, Berlin, mit den Planungs- und Bauarbeiten. Die Pläne wurden am 13. Juli 1899 vom Gemeinderat bestätigt, und die Arbeiten begannen unverzüglich.
