Vier Ursulinen - darunter zwei Töchter des Reichsgrafen von Nesselrode- Reichenstein aus Herten - treffen am 21. Januar aus dem Kölner Stammkloster in Dorsten ein. Um junge Frauen im christlichen Glauben zu erziehen, eröffnen sie im „Hohen Haus” in der Blindestraße (heute: Ursulastraße) eine unentgeltliche Elementarschule und eine Mädchenschule mit Internat. Nach dem Erwerb weiterer Häuser wird das „Hohe Haus” zur Klosterkirche umgebaut. Heute betreiben die Ursulienen ein bedeutendes Gymnasium und eine Realschule.
