Fürst Leopold von Salm-Salm, der der späteren Zeche in Hervest-Dorsten seinen Namen gab, vereinbarte mit den Bergwerksgesellschaften Bohr- und Förderrechte. Dem Regalherrn stand ein Prozent des Verkaufswertes der geförderderten Kohle zu, was allerdings durch einmalige Zahlungen abgelöst werden konnte. Die Bohrungen verliefen wegen des Fließsandes äußerst schwierig und konnten nur im Gefrierverfahren niedergebracht werden. 1913 förderte die Zeche Fürst Leopold mit einer Jahreskapazität von anfangs 39.000 Tonnen die erste Kohle. Ein 900 Meter langes Gleis verband die Zeche mit dem Staatsbahnhof Hervest-Dorsten.
