Die Gemeinde liegt im Tal der Kleinen Vils etwa 10 km südlich von Landshut, 20 km östlich von Moosburg, 15 km westlich von Vilsbiburg und 12 km nördlich von Velden.
Das Geschlecht der Fraunhofen, ein erstmals Anfang des 11. Jh. nachweisbares Ministerialengeschlecht, nannte sich nach dem Ort Altfraunhofen. 1077 bestätigte eine Kaiserurkunde Heinrich IV. Frawnhofen als zur Grund-Ausstattung des Klosters Frauenchiemsee seit seiner Gründung im 8. Jh. gehörig.
