Das Kirchdorf befindet sich etwa fünf Kilometer südlich von Betzenstein und liegt auf einer Höhe von 529 m ü. NHN.
Die ursprüngliche Bezeichnung von Riegelstein war Raupersdorf. Hans I. der Türrigel initialisierte den Bau der Burg Riegelstein . Seine Söhne nannten sich 1403 zum ersten Mal „Tyrrigel zum Riegelstein“, auch Türriegel oder Dürriegel. Dadurch erhielt das Dorf den Namen: „Riegelstein“. Die Türriegel waren Ministeriale der Schenken von Reicheneck und sagten sich mit einem umfangreichen Besitz um Riegelstein von den Schenken los. Ab 1403 waren sie allodial. Um das Jahr 1500 ist Heinrich VI. nicht nur Turnierritter in Ingolstadt, Bamberg und Würzburg, sondern hauptberuflich Pfleger auf den Burgen Stierberg und Betzenstein.
