Das Waldhufendorf liegt im Odenwald im hessischen Buntsandsteingebiet im Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald am Mossaubach. Durch den Ort verläuft die Landesstraße 3260.
Die älteste erhaltene Erwähnung des Dorfes als Nyddern Mossauwe stammt von 1426. Weitere Erwähnungen erfolgenden unten den Ortsnamen : Mossauwe , Unter Mosaue .
