Ursprünglich war der Ort ein kleines Fischerdorf im Mainbogen, das 1928 nach Frankfurt eingemeindet wurde. Neben dem dörflichen Ortskern im Süden sind große Teile von Industrieanlagen und Gewerbegebieten im Nordwesten geprägt.
Fechenheim liegt 105 m über NN, ca. 5 km östlich der Hauptwache und nördlich des Mains. Der Stadtteil grenzt im Norden an Frankfurt-Bergen-Enkheim, im Westen an den Riederwald und das Ostend, am anderen, südlichen Mainufer liegt Offenbach am Main sowie Offenbach-Bürgel im Osten.
