Das Bistum Münster ist eine flächenmäßig nicht zusammenhängende römisch-katholische Diözese im Münsterland und am Niederrhein sowie im Oldenburger Land . Es ist als Suffraganbistum Teil der Kirchenprovinz Köln.
Mit dem Bischöflichen Stuhl von Münster war bis 1803 auch eine weltliche Herrschaft verbunden, das Fürstbistum Münster. Es teilte sich in das Oberstift, das etwa dem heutigen Münsterland entsprach, und das Niederstift, das dem heutigen Oldenburger Münsterland sowie dem heutigen Landkreis Emsland entsprach. Dabei war das Gebiet des weltlichen Bistums bis 1666 größer als das des geistlichen, da das Niederstift kirchlich zum Bistum Osnabrück gehörte.
