Das Museo de las Casas Reales oder Palacios Reales, wie es während der Kolonialzeit genannt wurde, hatte als Sitz zwei Paläste, die aus dem 16. Jahrhundert stammen. Dieser königliche Palast wurde auf Befehl der spanischen Krone, unter der Herrschaft von Ferdinand II. von Aragon, am 5. Oktober 1511 erbaut, mit dem Ziel, die wichtigsten Regierungsbüros der damaligen Zeit unterzubringen.
Dieser wurde als Gebäude der Casas Reales bezeichnet, da sich dort die Real Audiencia befand, die das erste Gericht der Neuen Welt war; es wurde auch als Wohnsitz der Gouverneure und Generalkapitäns der damaligen Zeit genutzt, letzterer wurde als Capitanía General bezeichnet.
