George Orwell meldete sich als Freiwilliger bei der Miliz während des spanischen Bürgerkriegs. George Orwell trat der Partido Obrero de Unificacion Marxista oder POUM bei. Er beschrieb, dass er 1936 in Barcelona zum ersten Mal eine Stadt betrat, in der die Arbeiterklasse wirklich am Ruder war. In dieser Zeit war das Stierkampfen völlig ausgeschlossen, denn die besten Matadore waren Faschisten. 1937 begann die Säuberung der kommunistischen Gruppen in Barcelona, zu denen sowohl George Orwell als auch der belgische Ingenieur George Kopp gehörten. George Orwell und seine Frau konnten entkommen, aber George Kopp verschwand in einem der geheimen Gefängnisse.
