Der Quinto Real wurde durch ein Erlaß des Königs, genannt Quinto del Rey oder Quinto Real, geschaffen. Der Quinto Real ist eine Steuer, bei der jedes Schiff, das aus spanisch-amerikanischen Gewässern nach Sevilla kam, ein Fünftel der Waren für den König abgeben musste. Im Jahr 1723 wurde diese Steuer halbiert.
Der legendäre Reichtum des Vizekönigreichs Peru umfasste das gesamte Inkareich. Das Vizekönigreich Neuspanien erstreckte sich über einen großen Teil Mittelamerikas, Mexiko, die südamerikanischen Gebiete sowie die Philippinen. Anfangs stammte der Quinto Real aus dem Raub von Statuetten und prestigeträchtigen Objekten der Kaiser. Danach gab es das Goldwaschen und den Abbau von Gold- und Silberminen, insbesondere in Lima, Potosi und Mexiko.
