Napoleon ergriff die Initiative, hier auf Cap Gris Nez eine optische Telegraphie einzurichten, damit Nachrichten zwischen England und Frankreich übermittelt werden konnten. Diese optische Telegraphie oder Semaphore überträgt 'Informationen' durch visuelle Formen oder Signale, beispielsweise mit Jalousien oder Balken, die in einer bestimmten Form angeordnet sind. Der erste Semaphore wurde 1805 an der Kap installiert.
