Seit dem 10. Jahrhundert wird der Wald des Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais von bekannten Naturforschern (Linné, Jussieu und Buffon) seit dem 17. Jahrhundert studiert, und auch Maler (z. B. Millet, Rousseau, Corot) wurden von dem Wald angezogen und gründeten im 19. Jahrhundert die Barbizon-Schule. Aufgrund der Nähe zur Hauptstadt erhält die Region eine außergewöhnlich hohe Besucherzahl, was ein großes Managementanliegen darstellt.
