In der Schlacht bei Malplaquet in Nordfrankreich, südlich der belgischen Stadt Mons, besiegte am 11. September 1709 während des Spanischen Erbfolgekrieges eine alliierte Armee unter Marlborough und Prinz Eugen die Franzosen.Im Juni 1709 begannen die Verbündeten den Feldzug in Flandern mit der Belagerung von Tournai. Die Armee der Verbündeten auf diesem Kriegsschauplatz des Spanischen Erbfolgekrieges unter dem Befehl von Marlborough und Prinz Eugen war 90.000 Mann stark und verfügte über 120 Geschütze. Die Stadt fiel Ende Juli, am 3. September folgte die Zitadelle.
