Die Kathedrale, allgemein als Durham Kathedrale bezeichnet, wurde im Jahr 1093 n. Chr. gegründet. Sie gilt allgemein als eines der schönsten Beispiele einer normannischen Kathedrale und wurde zusammen mit dem nahegelegenen Durham Castle, das ihr gegenüber über Palace Green hoch oben über dem Fluss Wear liegt, zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt.
Die Kathedrale beherbergt das Schrein und die dazugehörigen Schätze des Cuthbert von Lindisfarne, eines Heiligen aus dem siebten Jahrhundert, die der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich sind. Sie ist auch die Heimat des Hauptes von St. Oswald von Northumbria und der Überreste des ehrwürdigen Bede. Man kann auch die 325 Treppen bis zur Spitze des 217 Fuß (66 m) hohen Turms erklimmen, um eine herausragende Aussicht auf Durham und die umliegende Gegend zu genießen.
