Die Halbinsel Istrien ist die größte Halbinsel in der Adria. Die Halbinsel liegt im Norden der Adria, zwischen dem Golf von Triest und dem Kvarner. Die Halbinsel wird von Kroatien, Slowenien und Italien geteilt. Der größte Teil gehört zu Kroatien, hauptsächlich zu der Gespanschaft Istrien (kroatisch: Istarska županija, italienisch: Regione istriana) und nur in geringem Maße zur Gespanschaft Primorje-Gorski Kotar (kroatisch: Primorsko-goranska županija). Ein kleiner Teil im Norden Istriens gehört zur slowenischen Region Primorska. Hier befinden sich die Küstenstädte und Hafenstädte Izola (Isola), Piran (Pirano), Portorož (Portorosa), Ankaran (Ancarano) und Koper (Capodistria), von denen Koper der einzige Handels Hafen ist. Die Gemeinde Muggia (slowenisch: Milje) bildet den italienischen Teil von Istrien. Istrien zieht traditionell viele Touristen an. Berühmte Persönlichkeiten wie Dante, Jules Verne, James Joyce und Robert Koch besuchten die Region.
