Im Jahr 1986 wurde ein Wettbewerb für eine Outdoor-Skulptur anlässlich des 200. Geburtstags der Stadt Reykjavík ausgeschrieben. Jón Gunnars "Sonnensucher" gewann den Wettbewerb, und das Aluminium-Modell (42,5 x 88 x 36 cm) wurde der Stadt zur Ausführung vorgelegt. Die maßstabsgetreue Sonnensucher-Statue wurde schließlich am Sæbraut zum Geburtstag der Stadt Reykjavík, am 18. August 1990, enthüllt.
Das Werk besteht aus rostfreiem Stahl und steht auf einem Kreis aus Granitplatten, umgeben von so genanntem „Rathausbeton“. Es wurde entsprechend Jón Gunnars größerem, maßstabsgetreuen Entwurf des Sonnensuchers gebaut und wurde von Jón Gunnars Assistenten, dem Künstler Kristinn E. Hrafnsson, begleitet. Die Technik der Statue wurde von dem Technologen Sigurjón Yngvason in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Jón Gunnar selbst betreut.
