Rom ist die Hauptstadt Italiens.
Mit etwa drei Millionen Einwohnern im Stadtgebiet bzw. rund vier Millionen Einwohnern in der Agglomeration ist sie die größte Stadt Italiens sowie die drittgrößte der Europäischen Union. Rom liegt in der Region Latium am Tiber.
Rom wurde erstmals im 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. vom Dichter Tibull Ewige Stadt genannt. Diese Bezeichnung, ursprünglich eine Antonomasie, wurde zu einem Ehrennamen für die Stadt wegen der Bedeutung in ihrer bis heute drei Jahrtausende umspannenden Geschichte.
