Der Bildhauer, Ettore Ferrari, war der Großmeister des Grande Oriente d'Italia, der freimaurerischen Jurisdiktion Italiens, die starke Befürworter der Vereinigung Italiens über die vorherige päpstliche Herrschaft in Rom waren. Zu seinen weiteren Skulpturen gehört ein Denkmal in Rovigo, Italien, für Giuseppe Garibaldi, der für die italienische Unabhängigkeit kämpfte und die französische Demokratie gegen den preußischen Imperialismus während des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges 1870-1871 verteidigte.
