Salerno , in der Antike lateinisch Salernum, ist eine Hafenstadt am Golf von Salerno, im Süden Italiens. Die erste Besiedlung fand im neunten Jahrhundert v. Chr. statt. Der Name der Stadt geht auf die römische Kolonie und das Militärlager Salernum zurück. Salerno ist heute Hauptstadt der Provinz Salerno in Kampanien sowie seit 1970 Universitätsstadt.
In den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entwickelte sich Salerno zu einer Großstadt und hat aktuell 132.702 Einwohner .
