Die Fontana Pretoria befand sich im 16. Jahrhundert an der Piazza Pretoria, die eigens für den Brunnen errichtet wurde.
Der Brunnen wurde ursprünglich vom spanischen Vizekönig von Neapel Pedro Álvarez de Toledo für seine Florentiner Villa von mehreren Bildhauern aus Florenz in Auftrag gegeben. Don Pedro starb jedoch, bevor die Arbeiten im Jahr 1554 abgeschlossen waren, und sein Sohn verkaufte den Brunnen im Jahr 1573 an die Stadt Palermo. Im selben Jahr wurde ein Platz vor dem Palazzo Pretorio , dem heutigen Rathaus , errichtet Dominikanerkirche Santa Caterina und die dort gesammelten 644 Teile der Quelle.
Der Brunnen hat einen Umfang von 133 Metern und ist 12 Meter hoch . Der Brunnen enthält viele Statuen von Flussgöttinnen und Nymphen. Da die meisten Statuen nackt sind, wird der Brunnen auch Brunnen der Schande genannt . Die Quelle wurde Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts vollständig restauriert.
