Im Dezember 1945, einen Tag vor seinem Rückflug in die USA, wurde Pattons Auto von einem Lastwagen gerammt. Patton war vom Hals abwärts gelähmt und starb in einem Krankenhaus in Heidelberg an den Folgen eines Lungenödems und einer Herzinsuffizienz, Patton wurde sechzig Jahre alt. Die offizielle Erklärung der U.S. Army für Pattons Tod ist, dass er auf einen tragischen Unfall zurückzuführen war, aber es wurde von einigen Autoren vorgeschlagen, dass mehr dahinter steckt. Robert K. Wilcox behauptet unter anderem, dass ein Anschlag von Gegnern Pattons verübt wurde, weil er im Begriff war, Informationen zu veröffentlichen, die für sie schädlich waren.
