Es war hier in diesem botanischen Garten in Leiden, dass der deutsche Arzt und Botaniker Philipp Franz von Siebold die japanische Staudenknöterich pflanzte. Er zog 1822 als Hauptchirurg des niederländischen Regiments nach Batavia und brachte die Fallopia japonica mit. Es ist die aggressivste Neophytenpflanze, die wir jetzt in unserer Region bekämpfen müssen. Um 1841 begann der Setzling in Leiden seinen unaufhaltbaren Vormarsch über den gesamten europäischen Kontinent.
