Auf diesem Hügel (Amersfoortse Berg) wurde ein Beobachtungsposten eingerichtet, um die Geschwindigkeit des Schalls durch den niederländischen Wissenschaftler Gerrit Moll zu messen. Dies geschah im Sommer 1823. Ein Kanon wurde aufgestellt, zusammen mit einem Teleskop und einer Reihe von Messinstrumenten, um die Einflussfaktoren zu bestimmen (Hygrometer, Thermometer, Barometer und Windmesser). Die Messung fand schließlich am 27.-28. Juni 1823 statt. Das Ergebnis war die genaueste Bestimmung der Schallgeschwindigkeit in der Welt (332 m/sec).
