Die Brücke verbindet Noordereiland mit dem alten Hafen. Die Brücke ist nach König Willem III benannt und wurde von C. Veerling entworfen. Sie wurde 1981 erstellt. 1983 erhielt sie den Nationalen Preis für Stahl (Nationale Staalprijs).
Der Vorgänger dieser Brücke spielte eine wichtige Rolle im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die niederländische Armee verteidigte diese Brücke nach der Invasion der Deutschen am 10. Mai 1940. Sie konnten die deutsche Invasion an diesem Punkt stoppen, und die Deutschen entschieden sich, das Zentrum von Rotterdam am 14. Mai 1940 zu bombardieren.
