Veere ist eine historische Stadt auf der ehemaligen Insel Walcheren.
Im Jahr 1509 wurde die Stadt von einer Sturmflut getroffen. Wolfert VI. von Borssele heiratete 1444 die schottische Königstochter Mary Stuart und da es 1541 zum Stapelplatz für schottische Wolle in den Niederlanden wurde, erlebte der Ort eine große Blüte. Der Stapelvertrag, ein Abkommen zwischen Karl V., Herrn der Niederlande, und dem schottischen König, führte zur Ansiedlung einer großen schottischen Kolonie in der kleinen Hafenstadt. Im Jahr 1600 waren 300 von 3000 Einwohnern schottisch.
Man handelte mit schottischer Wolle. Die Schiffe brachten Dachziegel, Tuch, Gartenbauprodukte und Waffen zurück nach Schottland.
Im Jahr 1572 schloss sich Veere, zusammen mit den meisten anderen Walcherse Städten, dem Aufstand gegen die Herrschaft Alvas an. In der Republik nahm die Stadt eine herausragende Position ein.
Während der Batavischen Republik wurde Veere anstelle einer Handelsstadt wieder zu einem (armen) Fischereihafen.
