Das Dorf Veenoord liegt direkt an Nieuw-Amsterdam - faktisch ist es eine Einheit, Nieuw-Amsterdam - Veenoord. Dass ein Teil einen anderen Namen hat, liegt daran, dass es vor der kommunalen Neuordnung von Drenthe in einer anderen Gemeinde lag, nämlich Sleen. Nieuw-Amsterdam - Veenoord wird auch als Zwillingsdorf bezeichnet. Seit der kommunalen Neuordnung am 1. Januar 1998 gehören beide Dörfer zur Gemeinde Emmen.
