Sie liegen wie weiße Perlen verstreut in der wunderschönen Landschaft von Südlimburg: die Fachwerkhäuser und Fachwerkhöfe. Das 'Skelett' der Häuser besteht aus Holz, Steinen, Stroh und Lehm. Bis 1850 war dies die normale Art, wie Häuser gebaut wurden. Bis ins vorige Jahrhundert pflegten Landwirte diese weißen Häuser mit Holzrahmen selbst.
Terstraten wurde 1969 als geschütztes Dorfbild aufgrund der vielen gut erhaltenen Fachwerkhöfe und Spekhäuser ausgewiesen. Das Weiler ist bekannt als ein wahres Malerparadies. 1952 wurde eines der Scheunen im Weiler abgerissen, um später im Niederländischen Freilichtmuseum in Arnheim wieder aufgebaut zu werden.
