Die Kommune liegt am Unterlauf des Flusses Tana , der auch auf einem Großteil seiner Länge die Grenze zu Finnland markiert. Die größten Siedlungen der Gemeinde sind neben dem Verwaltungssitz Tana bru noch Sirbma bzw. Sirma, Polmak, Skiippagurra und Austertana.
Die meisten Bewohner des Ortes sind Samen. Ihre Sprache ist Umgangssprache und wird in den Schulen gelehrt. Die Haupterwerbsquelle der Samen ist neben der Rentierzucht der Lachsfang. Der Fluss Tana ist einer der lachsreichsten Flüsse Europas.
