Das Shira-Plateau ist eines der 3 Plateaus des Kilimandscharo (die anderen sind Kibo (= der Krater) und Mawenzi). Es ist Welterbe.
Es ist windig und es regnet oft . Es gibt wenig Vegetation und Felsen. In der Umgebung gibt es Höhlen , in denen in den ersten Tagen des Aufstiegs übernachtet wurde. Das ist jetzt verboten. Es gibt auch Routen, die darauf abzielen, dieses Plateau zu erreichen und nicht weiter.
Das Plateau ist 13 km lang und liegt auf einer Höhe von 3500 m. Damit ist es eines der höchsten Plateaus der Welt . Das Plateau ist das Ergebnis eines 500.000 Jahre alten Vulkankraters , der erodiert wurde. Nicht weit davon entfernt liegt der Simba River.
